How to slow down skin aging – 6 simple tips for radiant skin

25.03.2025

Aging is a natural process – no one can stop it. What we can influence, however, is the rate at which we age. Premature skin aging is caused by habits that place unnecessary strain on our skin and make it appear older than it actually is.

It shows itself through signs such as a weaker skin barrier, increased wrinkles, spots or a pale complexion – but with a few conscious changes you can counteract this.

1. Quit smoking

Smoking increases the CO₂ content in the blood, which negatively affects every single cell. Your skin also suffers: It ages faster, loses elasticity, and is prone to wrinkles. Smoking has no positive effects—neither on your body, mind, nor your skin. Quitting is worth it: After just a few months, your skin's texture visibly improves.

2. Reduce alcohol

Avoiding alcohol is doing your skin a huge favor. Excessive consumption leads to dilated blood vessels, reddening of the skin, dryness, and poor muscle tone. The result: skin looks tired, uneven, and older. Conscious consumption is ideal – only occasionally, and in small amounts.

3. Sun protection is mandatory

The sun gives us valuable vitamin D – but also UV rays that penetrate deep into the skin. They cause wrinkles, dark spots, and dryness. Therefore, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily – especially before going outdoors. And: Clothing made of light, long fabrics provides additional protection.

4. Cleansing and moisturizing – daily

Hydrated skin is elastic, smooth, and resilient. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is prone to flaking, blemishes, and premature wrinkles. The basis of a good routine: gently cleanse twice a day, followed by applying a moisturizing cream. This strengthens the skin barrier and gives your complexion a fresher appearance.

5. Pay attention to your diet

What you eat shows on your skin. Fast food, sugar, and white flour promote inflammation and make skin oily, tired, or dull. Instead, focus on fresh vegetables, healthy fats (e.g., from avocados, nuts, olive oil), and sufficient protein to build collagen and elastin. It's best to seek advice from a nutritionist.

6. Exercise – every day

Regular exercise stimulates circulation, activates cellular metabolism, and strengthens the immune system—all important factors for healthy skin. You don't have to be a competitive athlete: Even 30 minutes of walking, yoga, or light strength training every day will have a noticeable effect on your radiance.

Conclusion

It's never too late to consciously care for your skin and make it look more youthful. Small, sustainable changes in your everyday life make all the difference: A healthy diet, less alcohol, sufficient exercise, and a simple yet effective skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection—this is your foundation for visibly healthy, radiant skin.
